David Speirs MP, announced a new agreement between the Murray-Darling Basin Ministers to help get the iconic Coorong back on track and restore the health of the South Lagoon.The agreement follows recommendations within the Coorong Summit Summary Report and the Goyder Expert Panel Report which outlined a series of short, medium and long-term actions to restore the South Lagoon. The project report released this month outlines their finding that restoration of salt fields through tidal reconnection leads to a net gain in soil organic carbon stocks and rapid revegetation. Compared to many terrestrial forests, these coastal vegetation communities can accumulate carbon at faster rates and store it for longer periods, making them an important tool to combat climate change. Infrastructure has been built along the River Murray over the last ten years to help sustain critical floodplain ecological communities by recreating some of the natural inundation regime that would have occurred prior to development. The benefits of providing these floodplains events are relatively well known, but until recently it wasn’t clear what effects infrastructure was having on the ecology and water quality in the river itself. In a world first, sharp-tailed sandpipers have been tracked using satellite trackers as they move around the Coorong and neighbouring wetlands before migrating to Siberia to breed. The shorebird tracking program is part of a suite of field research Goyder Institute for Water Research scientists have been undertaking in the Coorong over the summer to help efforts to restore the iconic wetland. Nutrients are known to be a key driver of aquatic ecosystem health. While nutrients are essential for all living organisms, high nutrient levels can lead to problems such as excessive algal growth, or ‘algal blooms’. Ongoing research by the Goyder Institute has identified that this is the case for the Coorong South Lagoon; the knowledge generated through this important research is being used to support decisions for managing nutrient levels and the health of the system.
