Goyder Institute research in full swing as 2017 comes to an end

This year has seen Goyder Institute research taken to the sky and the mangroves as part of the Coastal Carbon Opportunities: demonstrating additionality and potential for future offsets in South Australia project led by Professor Bronwyn Gillanders of the University of Adelaide.

The research team have documented their work on social media which includes the use of drones to conduct surveys, and trekking through muddy mangroves in the heat to collect core samples.

Progress on research to support South Australia's Carbon Sequestration Strategy

This year has also seen significant progress in research to support the implementation of South Australia’s Climate Change Strategy as part of the Goyder Institute’s Climate Action Impact Area. One such example is the Carbon Offsets Research to Support the State Carbon Sequestration Strategy project led by Professor Jeff Connor from the University of South Australia. The project team will complete an assessment of South Australia’s caarbon offset supply early in the new year.

The objective of this task was to assess the carbon offset potential that is possible under current Commonwealth Emissions Reduction Fund (ERF) opportunities and for some novel methods that could become certifiable in the future. Some preliminary results showing spatial differences in carbon sequestration potential for Mallee woodlands and shrublands across SA are shown below (please note that these results have not yet been peer-reviewed and so should be considered indicative only).

In the future, the research team will use this information to estimate the carbon offset potential and costs for switching land-use from current practices. This is being done across the South Australian agricultural and rangeland over short, medium and long timeframes. This information will then be used to identify additional viable carbon offset options for South Australia that are not currently viable as part of the ERF. 

 

CRAFT project runs successful workshop

The Climate Resilience Analysis Framework and Tools (CRAFT) project held a training workshop on the 21st November 2017 at the University of Adelaide. The purpose of the workshop was to demonstrate and train participants in the application of the Climate resilience analysis framework and the software tools developed to support its application. The framework provides a general approach for understanding the resilience of natural and engineered systems under a range of climate conditions. It is anticipated that the framework will also be adopted for use in climate adaptation planning by science and engineering groups within state government, water utilities, local government and consulting. Seventeen participants from CSIRO, DEWNR, SA Water, Bureau of Meteorology, PIRSA-SARDI, Water Research Australia, Salisbury water and Inside Infrastructure attended the workshop.
